Many of us have hobbies that we are passionate about. But wouldn't it be great if our hobbies also earn for us some money? Here are profiles of three women who turned their hobbies into successful home business.

It's great to delve into an interesting hobby such as artwork, photography, or crafting paper jewelry. It's even more exciting (and financially rewarding) to turn your special talents into a successful home-based business. That's exactly what Mary Maturi of Cleveland Ohio, Leslie Croyle of Bay Village, Ohio, and Marlene Stephenson of Virginia, Minnesota, did. Each turned her hobby into a cash-generating business complete with paying customers and a bank account.

These aren't isolated stories. Men and women across the country are joining the ranks of entrepreneurs converting hobbies into money-paying propositions. It's important to note that none of these women originally planned to start a business. On the contrary, interest by others in their hobbies convinced them to sell their work.

Mary Maturi's Killer Whales

Mary Maturi markets a line of "Killer Whale" petroglyph tee-shirts, sweat shirts, and note cards both in Alaskan gift shops and in natural history museums in the lower forty-eight states.

It all started when Mary and her family spent a year living in Wrangell, a small town located on Wrangell Island in southeast Alaska. One day Mary ventured down to Petroglyph Beach on the island. Petroglyphs are ancient rock carvings left by an unknown people. Using rice paper and different colored ferns, Mary "rubbed" the petroglyphs to capture their images on paper. When others saw her rubbings, they offered to buy them.

"Peoples interest really surprised me, so I thought of other ways to share the uniqueness of the petroglyphs with out having to deal with their awkward size (some were several feet in length). That's how the "Killer Whale" notecards were born," Mary says. Using her rubbings as a guide, she created smaller scale pen and ink drawings which she took to a printer to get price quotes for paper, printing and envelopes."

The major cost of printing is making the plates. Therefore, it's wise to get price quotes for different runs of 1,000," says Mary. For example, a run of 3,000 cards might cost around 10 cents per card while a run of 6,000 note cards could drop that per unit cost below 8 cents per card. That decreases your card cost by more than 20 percent - quite a savings. Mary also recommends getting bids from several suppliers or even splitting up the order.

While printers know how to price their printing competitively, they don't make their own envelopes. Mary uses the least costly printer that can deliver the quality of paper stock she desires, but buys her envelopes from a warehouse specialist at a savings of nearly 35 percent from prices quoted by printers and other envelope suppliers. It pays to let your fingers do the walking and get competitive quotes.

Once Mary obtained the cost estimates, she visited several gift stores and museums to gather pricing information on competing notecards. She also talked to store owners and museum managers to determine their interest in ordering. After all, it would make no sense to have the notecards printed unless buyers would purchase at prices that can generate a profit.

Leslie Croyle's Photo Finish

Leslie Croyle converted her love of photography and knack for framing into a full-fledged photo decorating business.

Leslie and two friends offered for sale enlarged photos of popular Cleveland events such as the start of the Revco-Cleveland Marathon & 10K, and a spectacular shot of the United Way Kickoff's release of thousands of colored balloons in Public Square.

"We hired several photographers to cover the events and used the best photographs of the bunch," say Leslie. Advertisements for photo promotion proved popular. The trio sold 600 photos at prices ranging from $8 to $10 a piece, gathering a bit less than $5,400 in revenues. Not bad for the first venture. Unfortunately, the combined costs of ads, fees for the photographers ate up the $5,400 and more. "Although we ended up with a loss, it gave us a lot of market exposure and a proven track record," says Leslie.

Next, Leslie and her friends put together a portfolio of photographs and contacted local businesses. This marketing move landed them a job of photo decorating PJ McIntyre's Restaurant in a Cleveland shopping center. "We tied in the nostalgia theme of the restaurant by contacting area historical societies and arranging to have their vintage photographs copied. It's important to make sure you have the right to reuse the prints. Ask for proper releases and permission to use whatever photos you have copied," advises Leslie.

She stresses the importance of networking industry contacts. A decorating firm they worked with on one project led to additional work when that firm recommended Leslie and her partners to some of their other clients.

Since 1987, the photo decorating business has progressed well since its initial unprofitable photo event ventures. Major projects include photo decorating the guest rooms and suites for the historic Glidden House, which has been made into a unique bed and breakfast, and an all-sports photo motif for the Grand Slam Bar & Restaurant in the refurbished Cleveland Flats night spot area.

"From our humble beginnings, we're now getting into some pretty good sized jobs," says Leslie. "Just keep bumbling along - don't give up."

Marlene Stephenson's Paper Products

Marlene Stephenson makes her money tearing paper. Actually, her unique sculptured jewelry draws rave reviews wherever she wears it. In fact, people routinely ask to buy her unique designs right off her dress when she appears at public functions.

Marlene is a medical technician by trade, and her paper profits grew out of a coffee get-together group of friends that met once a week to try their hands at new craft ideas. One day one of the ladies brought a book on making paper jewelry. "I just fell in love with it and made a pin and some earrings to wear to a business meeting. Lots of the women at the meeting asked me to make some for them also," says Marlene.

As with any fashion item, Marlene pays attention to color schemes and design. Even though she makes several copies of different designs, each is unique in color, shading, size, and even texture. Marlene crafts her one-a-kind jewelry to match her customers special outfits.

"With any small business, it's important to link up with other small businesses," stresses Marlene. For example, her local hairdresser lets Marlene display her paper jewelry at her shop. Local gift stores either buy the pins and earrings outright or take them on consignment, which means they pay for the items after they sell. Marlene also teamed up with several other artists to display their work at trade shows.

"Try to tailor your product to the particular market. With the loon as the state bird of Minnesota, my loon pins always do well at local craft shows," she says. Likewise, when Marlene sent samples of her pins to trade show in Anchorage, Alaska, she made some new designs to capture the wilds of Alaska, These pins included a polar bear, Alaska wild flowers, whales, and fish.

What ever your own hobby pursuits, you may be over looking an opportunity to turn personal interests into money-making enterprises. Investigate the possibilities, calculate the costs, analyze the market, and move forward with your plan of action. Take your lead from these three women who have turned hobbies into profits.

“A legal assistant or paralegal is a person qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.”(a)

A competent paralegal needs a solid legal education and a dedicated student can find such training at many community colleges offering Associates Degrees in Legal Studies. Some universities now offer Bachelor’s or even Master’s Programs for paralegals. (A word of caution: be careful of on-line courses promising unrealistic earnings and status. Like any other profession, achieving competency as a paralegal requires work.) Additionally, The National Association of Legal Assistants, awards a certification as a Certified Legal Assistant if certain objectives are met including taking required continuing education courses and passing a rigorous examination. (It is the gold standard in the field and opens many doors.) But, for one to be comfortable with, competent and reliable enough to work as a freelancer on a per assignment basis, a paralegal should have some in office experience. After that, depending on talent, desire, work assigned or accepted and personal circumstances some are ready to work in home based paralegal outsource businesses.

To run a successful business of this type from home, one needs all the traditional attributes any other home worker needs to become successful. The more one knows about the business the better, and it may be as important for the entrepreneur to be a sharp business person able to make contacts, prospect and organize as to perform the paralegal tasks. Many large and small corporations’ legal departments are looking to outsource their paralegal work, as are many law firms, both large and small. Since the law is broken down into distinct specializations such as Personal Injury, Real Estate, Contracts, Criminal, Workers Compensation, Intellectual Property just to name a few, it is important that as a resource, the freelancer does not overreach when establishing a reputation and developing business. The home office will not be any better than the weakest paralegal assignment submitted for payment to the contracting company or law firm. Another difficult problem may not be finding the work; there is plenty to go around. But in deciding which work to solicit and thoroughly understanding the standards expected when taking on an assignment. This simple concept will make or break the business. Somewhere along the line, a licensed attorney will have to sign off on the paralegal’s work, so the more complex and sophisticated the assignment, the more experienced and educated the legal assistant should be.

Home-based business and work-at-home opportunity scams rank very high on the list of the top types of Internet fraud.

In this issue, we'll focus on the Top 10 home-based business/work-at-home scams. We'll give you the straight goods on envelope stuffing, mystery shopping, and other common home-based business "opportunities" you may have seen floating around the Net.

Then in the next issue, we'll give you some important tips you can use to kick the tires of any online job offers or business opportunities you find so you can protect yourself from those that are scams.

Work-At-Home and Home-Based Business Scams

There are two basic types of scams involved here. Scammers using both types are aiming at folks who want to make money from home, either by:

1. Having you work from home, doing envelope stuffing, craft assembly, or other tasks where you are (supposedly) paid by a company as an employee.

There are certainly some legitimate telecommuting jobs, but work-from-home jobs are often just big scams.

Before we go any further, a sobering quote: "There are very few legitimate [work-at-home job] opportunities available," says Beverley Williams, President and Founder of the American Association of Home-Based Businesses.

2. "Helping" you start your own home-based business, as a mystery shopper, network marketer, or other businesses where the only money anyone sees is the money the scammer pockets.

Certainly, there are LOTS of legitimate businesses that can help you start your own home business. We'll help you figure out which are real -- and which are just scams.

Our goal with Internet ScamBusters is to save you time, money and heartbreak before you fall for the scams. Remember -- if it sounds too good to be true... *it probably is*.

Why Are These Scams So Successful?

It all comes down to psychology. Besides the "make money fast" dream that many Internet newcomers fall prey to, home-based "opportunities" scammers mooch off the following groups. Perhaps you belong to one or more of them:

1. The Sick, Disabled, or Elderly: If you are elderly, ill, or have a disability, you may have problems landing a traditional job.

2. The Stay-At-Home Mother: Whether you have a spouse or you're single, you may be looking to supplement or create an income while raising children.

3. The Low-Income or No-Income Family: You or your spouse may have just lost your job, and you feel desperate and anxious to find work as the bills pile up.

4. The Person Without Higher Education: You're not stupid or dumb -- you just didn't go on to college or university.

To summarize, these scammers are often preying primarily on the sick, the disabled, the elderly, the unemployed, parents, and people without a lot of money.

The Top 10 Home-Based Business/Work-At-Home Scams

Note: These scams are not ranked by dollars lost or people scammed. In fact, there's nothing scientific about the list. It's just the ten home-based business scams we find the most disturbing.

10. Craft Assembly

This scam encourages you to assemble toys, dolls, or other craft projects at home with the promise of high per-piece rates. All you have to do is pay a fee up-front for the starter kit... which includes instructions and parts.

Sounds good? Well, once you finish assembling your first batch of crafts, you'll be told by the company that they "don't meet our specifications."

In fact, even if you were a robot and did it perfectly, it would be impossible for you to meet their specifications. The scammer company is making money selling the starter kits -- not selling the assembled product. So, you're left with a set of assembled crafts... and no one to sell them to.

9. Medical Billing

In this scam, you pay $300-$900 for everything (supposedly) you need to start your own medical billing service at home. You're promised state-of-the-art medical billing software, as well as a list of potential clients in your area.

What you're not told is that most medical clinics process their own bills, or outsource the processing to firms, not individuals. Your software may not meet their specifications, and often the lists of "potential clients" are outdated or just plain wrong.

As usual, trying to get a refund from the medical billing company is like trying to get blood from a stone.

8. Email Processing

This is a twist on the classic "envelope stuffing scam" (see #1 below). For a low price ($50?) you can become a "highly-paid" email processor working "from the comfort of your own home."

Now... what do you suppose an email processor does? If you have visions of forwarding or editing emails, forget it. What you get for your money are instructions on spamming the same ad you responded to in newsgroups and Web forums!

Think about it -- they offer to pay you $25 per email processed -- would any legitimate company pay that?

7. "A List of Companies Looking for Homeworkers!"

In this one, you pay a small fee for a list of companies looking for homeworkers just like you.

The only problem is that the list is usually a generic list of companies, companies that don't take homeworkers, or companies that may have accepted homeworkers long, long ago. Don't expect to get your money back with this one.

6. "Just Call This 1-900 Number For More Information..."

No need to spend too much time (or money) on this one. 1-900 numbers cost money to call, and that's how the scammers make their profit.

Save your money -- don't call a 1-900 number for more information about a supposed work-at-home job.

5. Typing At Home

If you use the Internet a lot, then odds are that you're probably a good typist. How better to capitalize on it than making money by typing at home?

Here's how it works: After sending the fee to the scammer for "more information," you receive a disk and printed information that tells you to place home typist ads and sell copies of the disk to the suckers who reply to you. Like #8, this scam tries to turn you into a scammer!

4. "Turn Your Computer Into a Money-Making Machine!"

Well, this one's at least half-true. To be completely true, it should read: "Turn your computer into a money-making machine... for spammers!"

This is much the same spam as #5, above. Once you pay your money, you'll be sent instructions on how to place ads and pull in suckers to "turn their computers into money-making machines."

3. Multi-Level Marketing (MLM)

If you've heard of network marketing (like Amway), then you know that there are legitimate MLM businesses based on agents selling products or services.

One big problem with MLMs, though, is when the pyramid and the ladder-climbing become more important than selling the actual product or service.

If the MLM business opportunity is all about finding new recruits rather than selling products or services, beware: The Federal Trade Commission may consider it to be a pyramid scheme... and not only can you lose all your money, but you can be charged with fraud, too!

We saw an interesting MLM scam recently: one MLM company advertised the product they were selling as FREE. The fine print, however, states that it is "free in the sense that you could be earning commissions and bonuses in excess of the cost of your monthly purchase of" the product. Does that sound like free to you?

2. Chain Letters/Emails ("Make Money Fast")

If you've been on the Internet for any length of time, you've probably received or at least seen these chain emails. They promise that all you have to do is send the email along plus some money by mail to the top names on the list, then add your name to the bottom... and one day you'll be a millionaire.

Actually, the only thing you might be one day is prosecuted for fraud. This is a classic pyramid scheme, and most times the names in the chain emails are manipulated to make sure only the people at the top of the list (the true scammers) make any money.

This scam should be called "Lose Money Fast" -- and it's illegal.

1. Envelope Stuffing

This is THE classic work-at-home scam. It's been around since the U.S. Depression of the 1920s and 1930s, and it's moved onto the Internet like a cockroach you just can't eliminate.

There are several variations, but here's a sample: Much like #5 and #4 above, you are promised to be paid $1-2 for every envelope you stuff. All you have to do is send money and you're guaranteed "up to 1,000 envelopes a week that you can stuff... with postage and address already affixed!"

When you send your money, you get a short manual with flyer templates you're supposed to put up around town, advertising yet another harebrained work-from-home scheme.

And the pre-addressed, pre-paid envelopes? Well, when people see those flyers, all they have to do is send you $2.00 in a pre-addressed, pre-paid envelope. Then you stuff that envelope with another flyer and send it to them.

Ingenious perhaps... but certainly illegal and unethical.

I know you must be wondering what the heck is the connection between grocery shopping and work at home. Don’t worry it’s all going to make sense very soon. Bare with me as I tell my story. I promise at the end it will help you work at home today.

In any event, I went to my local supermarket Super Stop & Shop. First and foremost I never knew there was a "super" version of any grocery store. I was raised in "The Bronx" (Don’t hold that against me.) and where I lived our supermarkets were very small and packed. You just went in and got your groceries and left. Well now I live in the suburbs (Big deal.) and grocery stores are very different. They’re super!

So I’m walking around my grocery store which are significantly bigger and more organized in the suburbs. I happen to walk past a woman near the butcher section who was giving out samples of this new Cajun turkey. Initially I thought there was a catch. Again because I’m from the Bronx I am very skeptical by nature. But as I’m trying to figure out the catch. A woman with two kids stops by and takes a sample for herself and the little ones do as well. Suddenly they just walk away. Needless to say, I was a bit thrown back. Why you may ask? Well in my old supermarket there were no such things as free samples. So I was certain there would be a catch. But to my surprise there wasn’t!

Companies who are confident about their products are willing to give out free samples because they feel strongly that you are likely to make a purchase.

They know enough people will do this where they won’t be losing money by giving out free samples. So let’s look at the supermarket scenario again with a different twist. Imagine if the sample lady would have provided me the sample turkey and wanted to pay me for eating it. Do you think I would be more willing to try the turkey? You damn right I would! I’m almost positive you would too!

Well the good news for you is that companies on the web are doing this all the time. They have realized that it’s not really cost effective to merely pay for radio, TV or print ads or a sample lady. Everyone knows the internet is the place to be. So companies have taken the free sample experience online. But the huge difference is they will pay you to try samples of any product of interest to you.

That’s right you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your home. Most companies will deliver the products to your house or they will provide them online. You try it for a few days and if you like it you buy it, if not you don’t buy it and you still get paid a check for the ‘hardship’ of trying something you wanted anyway.

Wow that’s such a hard job. Not! It’s a win win situation for the company and you. But more importantly for you and your family. Product testers get paid any where from $1 to $50 to try one product and there are literally hundreds of products to try. Do you realize how much money you could be earning right now?

The negatives….

Well honestly there might be some bad aspects of this work at home opportunity. In general most of the products are totally free. But some products are what’s referred to as risk free. Risk free usually means you get to try the product for free for a certain amount of time anywhere from 7 days to 15 days. But before you can do so you must use your credit card to sign up for the offer. But your card isn’t charged until after your trial period is over. If you decide that the product is not all that good, you merely call or email the company and let them know you want to cancel and not to charge your card. That’s it. The company won’t charge your card. You usually keep the product and you still get paid a commission for trying it. So that might be considered a negative. But keep in mind you don’t have to do risk free offers. They pay a lot more but if you don’t feel comfortable with the terms then just focus on free product trials.

Another type of product test is when the company will give you product for free but you have to pay for shipping and handling which is usually $6 or $7. Now I only do this offer when I know that I’ll get close to double my money back. So if I have to pay a shipping of $6 the company must pay me at least $12 for trying their product. So this way I make my shipping money back and get an extra $6. This isn’t really a negative to me. It’s the same concept of a savings account. I don’t know any bank where I can put in my money and make close to or double back my money in 7-15 days. If you do then you should avoid doing the pay for shipping offers I just mentioned in this paragraph. But for me this type of offer is a good as the free trial offers. Personally I don’t think any of the items above are negative because you get paid either way. But I know some people will view them as such. Hopefully you’re one of the smarter ones.
